COVID-19 Update - School Closure
Posted 03/27/2020 09:23AM

Dear Families,

"Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond have announced that school campuses in California will not be able to reopen this school year. To be clear, the 2019-2020 school year has not ended. The remainder of the school year now transitions from in-person classroom instruction to instruction and support for students through distance learning options as described by California Department of Education (CDE)." Please read the letter from our County Superintendent of Schools along with all superintendents in Santa Clara County regarding school closure and distance learning.

All Evergreen School District schools and the district office will be closed through June 12th. Please continue to check our school and district websites for regular updates about our response to the COVID-19 virus.

From now until Spring Break, all recommended resources will be optional for students. No work will be graded to affect their grades. Teachers may assign optional work for students to support virtual classroom discussions and to keep students from falling behind in their academics. Since our school closure, teachers have been working hard in adjusting to a different mode of teaching and learning. They are becoming more familiar with video conferencing (Google Hangouts Meet and/or Zoom) and researching on the best practices for distance learning. Mostly likely by now, your child have participated in one or more Google Hangouts Meet or Zoom with their teacher. As teachers are figuring out what platform works better for them, training is also taking place to assist teachers in this new mode of teaching.

We have distributed technology devices to families who have requested them in preparation for distance learning. If you have any questions regarding technology, please email Dr. Nguyen at hnguyen@eesd.org.

Distance learning will be taking place on April 20th, after Spring Break for all of Evergreen School District. For more information, please see the previous email (see below) from Assistant Superintendent, Dan Deguara. During distance learning, your child will be expected to interact face-to-face through Google Hangouts Meet and/or Zoom with their classroom teacher everyday. There will be daily check-ins, direct instruction in ELA and Math, and also office hours. Students will be using Google Classroom (classroom.google.com) in Grades TK, 1-6 and SeeSaw (https://web.seesaw.me/) in Kindergarten. You should have received information from your classroom teacher regarding this or will be soon. For students who have not signed up, teachers will be checking to make sure the accounts are active prior to the launch of district learning. More details will come from the classroom teacher.

While at home, students can access online instruction through iReady (ELA and Math) at clever.com and access online textbook resources (Reading and Math) through http://tm.pathtoexcel.com.

Google Password: First Name + 4-Digit Birthdate (Example: john0214)

Student ID # can be located on the recent report card. If the username and password does not work, please email Dr. Nguyen at hnguyen@eesd.org.

We understand that it is not easy to run a household, teach, and also help with technology at home. It could be overwhelming and scary. We know that families are doing the best that they can and we know that teachers and staff are also doing the best that they can. Thank you for your patience as we embark on this new journey together. Don't hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher or Dr. Nguyen at hnguyen@eesd.org if you have any questions.

Please be safe and stay healthy.

April 1, 2020

Dear Santa Clara County School Communities,

Thank you for your dedication as we continue to navigate the regional and state shelter-at-home order for the safety and well-being of our students and families. The unified effort as we persist through these unprecedented and challenging times together has been nothing short of remarkable.

Governor Newsom and State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tony Thurmond have announced that school campuses in California will not be able to reopen this school year. To be clear, the 2019-2020 school year has not ended. The remainder of the school year now transitions from in-person classroom instruction to instruction and support for students through distance learning options as described by California Department of Education (CDE).

We will continue to navigate our way through this pandemic locally with the guidance of Dr. Sara Cody and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department so that we can ensure the health and safety of our students and their families as well as for our staff.

We acknowledge that distance learning comes with its own set of challenges, and we commit to provide students, families and educators with ongoing support. As all of our districts further implement distance learning options and academic strategies, the social and emotional well-being of all of our students is of utmost importance to us. We are working to find ways to stay connected which will continue to help us learn together and celebrate important milestones. In the coming weeks, each of our districts will provide families with information regarding how grades, graduation, transcripts, scholarships, summer school, and continued distance learning instruction will be handled.

Our community is strong, and together we will overcome the negative impact of these life-changing events. When school sites re-open, we will enthusiastically welcome back our students, staff, and families to our campuses. In the meantime, thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding.

Sincerely,

Evergreen Schools Shut Down and Student Dismissals From Regular School Attendance To Be Extended Until May 1, 2020

San Jose, CA – Seven Bay Area county health officers, in collaboration with their six county superintendents of schools have made a unified, regional decision to extend school closures and student dismissals from regular school attendance through May 1, 2020 to slow the spread of COVID-19 to the maximum extent possible. Evergreen School District's (ESD) highest priority is the safety and wellness of all students, school personnel, and the community.

Building on the regional coordination the Bay Area jurisdictions took on March 16, 2020 in issuing Health Officer orders requiring all residents to shelter in place, the following Bay Area county agencies have been working together over the last several weeks to align strategies and practices during this unprecedented time for public education:

 _Alameda County Office of Education

 _Contra Costa County Office of Education

 _Marin County Office of Education

 _San Francisco Unified School District

 _San Mateo County Office of Education

 _Santa Clara County Office of Education

With the support and collaboration of the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) and Department of Public Health (DPH), we recognized the need to extend the period of school closures and student dismissals through May 1, 2020. Evergreen School District (ESD) will continue to serve our students with Grab and Go Lunch Service throughout the shut down period. Plans for long distance learning are currently being worked on and ESD will be sending out information to our families as soon as they are finalized.

During this time, all residents are expected to adhere to the "Shelter in Place" Orders issued by the Public Health Officers on March 16 and stay home except for essential activities until further notification from the Department of Public Health.

In addition, all residents are urged to keep practicing the guidance provided by the Department of Public Health including:

 _Social distancing

 _Washing hands often with soap and water

 _Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth

 _Staying home if you are feeling sick

 _Contacting your healthcare provider if you are experiencing any symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

 _Engage in regular exercise or physical activity

The regional connections across our most populous counties in the Bay Area require a coordinated approach. Evergreen School District and Santa Clara County Office of Education will continue to work in close partnership with Department of Public Health to support the children, parents, and essential workforce in our community.

Dear Evergreen School District Community,

As you know, to mitigate the COVID-19 concerns, schools in Santa Clara County will be closed to school attendance starting Monday, March 16th through Friday, April 3rd. Schools will reopen on Monday, April 6, 2020.

Evergreen School District will have office staff available at school sites to support families that need questions answered with office hours from 10am to 2pm. Additionally, the District Office will remain open from 10am to 2pm.

Please note the following:

  • Spring Break will remain as scheduled, from April 10 - 17
  • Educational Services Team will be providing families options to support continued learning at home during the shutdown. Online resources, with limited options for parents to pick up printed materials, will be provided. These materials will not be teacher or school specific and will support a range of subject areas and interests. Completion is not required and materials should be considered supplemental. As such, they will not be graded. Families can expect to receive a link to the resources and additional information regarding the distribution of packets via e-mail on Monday, March 16.
  • Evergreen School District is committed to continuing to support our students by providing students a nutritional lunch service at designated schools. The lunch service will be a "grab and go" format with no space for students to consume lunch onsite. Families can expect to receive information on designated sites and distribution times on Monday, March 16. Lunch service will begin on Tuesday, March 17th and will continue for the duration of the shutdown.
  • Please continue with common sense hygiene approaches and self-quarantine should you or a family member be ill or exposed as per direction by the Santa Clara County Public Health Department.
  • Check the District's website www.eesd.org for the latest up-to-date information for updates

We will continue to share updates. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and consideration. Our community's health and safety is our number one priority.

Sincerely,

Dr. Emy Flores, Superintendent
