Policies

Chaboya is a closed campus, as are all Evergreen schools. Students must use the entrances on the sidewalk in front of the school or to the east and south of the blacktop and field areas. Students are required to remain on campus during the entire school day. If students must leave for an appointment during the school day, parents should send a note that morning stating what time the student will be picked up in the office. If someone other than the parent will pick up the student, that needs to be stated in the note, and the name must be listed in Parent Portal. Students will not be released to anyone who is not listed in Parent Portal. We are not allowed to release a child without a parent’s written permission. Other than after school activities with the required permission slips on file, students should leave campus immediately after school. Students are also reminded that they are accountable for their behavior on the way to and from home and school, and should stay away from other school campuses.

In addition to the lunch and breakfast menus published monthly, hot entrees, snacks, and milk are served in the cafeteria. Free and reduced lunch information will be sent home with students the first week of school. Each student must submit a new application each year. If a student was on the free and reduced lunch program, he or she will continue on the program until the new application is approved. Deadline for all applications is October 1. Students may not share food they bring to school with others. Parents may only bring food for their own children to eat at school.

Students may walk, use private transportation, or ride their bicycles with helmets to get to school. Skateboards, scooters, shoes with wheels or other means of transportation are not allowed at Chaboya. Please see our Transportation page for more information.

The health office is only for students who are ill or injured at school. Please be sure to update information in Parent Portal whenever there are any changes.

State regulations require that all prescribed or over the counter medications necessary to be taken during the school day must be prescribed or approved by the doctor and documented on a school district form or on a physician’s form, and signed by the parent on file. Medications must be sent to the school in a prescription bottle or in the original labeled container. Parents requesting that their student carry their medication with them at school must also complete the proper documents, and must have them on file in the School Health Office prior to students carrying the medication. The following items are not allowed at Chaboya for any reason: pepper spray, weapons or look-alikes, including any type of blade, drugs, tobacco, electronic cigarettes, electronic devices, skateboards, scooters, shoes with wheels, iPods or personal players, pornographic materials, permanent marking pens, squirt guns, water balloons, shaving cream, explosives of any kind, paint, glass or aerosol containers, hairspray, chewing gum, items that distract from learning, gang affiliated items, or illegal items. Balloons and other celebratory items are not allowed as well.

Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated. Serious disciplinary action will occur for bullying and harassment situations. All students need to report actions and behavior that cause personal discomfort in the classroom, on school property, and through online interactions. Learn the differences between daily interactions with others to create a climate of safety and kindness.

Words, looks, actions, or gestures that result in making someone feel uncomfortable or unsafe will be considered harassment and will not be tolerated. This includes actions, comments, and any verbal or written communication, including on social media, or through any other messaging platforms directed at someone’s ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or physical appearance. Moreover, no public display of affection is allowed (kissing, hugging, holding hands, etc.).

Bullying and cyberbullying is serious and will not be tolerated. There is a form on the school’s website to report alleged bullying that occurs on school property, at a school-sponsored event off school property, on a school bus, on the way to and/or from school, or online through social media. If you are a student, parent/guardian, teacher, or other staff member and wish to report an incident of alleged bullying, complete the entire form and respond only to questions that you feel comfortable answering and are able to answer accurately. Students may choose to include their name on the form or may submit the form anonymously. Please note that the district’s ability to investigate an anonymous complaint may be limited, and the district prohibits retaliation against anyone who files a bullying report.

Unsafe behavior includes verbal and physical bullying, cyberbullying, harassment, weapons on campus, and any action that can cause harm to oneself and/or others. All students need to report actions and behavior that cause personal discomfort in the classroom, on school property, and through online interactions. If you are not sure whether a situation is considered unsafe, speak with a teacher, administrator, counselor, parent, or trusted adult. Talking and consulting with a trusted adult can help you decide what to do.

Students should be dressed for learning. Skirts and shorts should not be shorter than the student’s finger-tips when their arms hang by their side. Undergarments should not be visible. Students who are not dressed for learning will be asked to change into appropriate attire. With the ever changing fashion trends, it is difficult to have a comprehensive list of acceptable attire. Therefore, appropriate attire is based on staff and administration discretion to ensure success for all students. Backpacks may not be decorated or written on with anything other than the student’s name.

Please turn in any item found to the appropriate area, and check these areas regularly for lost items. Every quarter the school turns in large quantities of shoes and clothing to the needy because no one claims them.

* Large items, such as clothing are located in the school library.
* Jewelry, wallets, keys, and glasses are located in the office.
* Items lost in the locker rooms are located in the P.E. locker room

Accountable talk is a respectful discussion strategy to hold students “accountable” for what they want to say. Engage in respectful dialogue with peers and teachers inside or outside the classroom through accountable talk.

Tardies are tracked every quarter. Students must be in their assigned seats when the tardy bell rings, or they will be considered tardy.

Students are to arrive at school every day with the materials they need to be successful in all their classes. Students will receive information from each teacher as to what is needed for each class. In addition, students are to bring daily their Student Agenda, binders, textbooks, pens, pencils, and paper as well as other materials specified by the student’s teachers. If there is a problem purchasing needed materials, parents may contact the front office.

All physical limitations must be authorized by a doctor. Parents may excuse their child from Physical Education (P.E.) for three days. After three days, a note is required by the student's physician.

The physical education uniform consists of Chaboya's P.E. clothes or plain black athletic shorts and a plain white t-shirt. Students who are not dressed for participating in P.E. class will not be allowed in the locker room. Athletic shoes are required to be tied.  See the Physical Education Department page for more information about P.E. uniforms.

Research has revealed that students who are late or miss school regularly find it difficult to be successful in any of their endeavors. Absences and tardies are recorded electronically. If you have any questions regarding attendance, please contact the front office.

Notify the school office to report absences. Parents are to call the school when a student is absent. Upon return, the student must bring a parent note to the front office before 8:10AM if the parent did not call the office (specifying the reason and dates for the absence). Excused absences include illness, doctor’s appointment, or bereavement. (California Education Code 48260(a).)

Upon receipt of a valid note from their parent, a student will be issued a re-admit slip for presentation to each teacher whose class he or she missed. Students are to get their re-admit slip in the office prior to 8:10AM on the morning of their return.

Students are expected to make up any missed assignments due to any type of absence. Upon return to school, it is the student’s responsibility to get assignments from their teachers after class or after school. Teachers are not required to provide homework for unexcused absences. Excused absences include: a doctor’s appointment, illness, or bereavement.

While students are on the school campus, all cell phones and other electronic signaling devices must be turned off unless allowed by a teacher. Electronic devices must also be kept out of sight and remain the student’s responsibility. Students are not allowed to use their cell phones to call or text their parents unless given permission to do so. Students who violate this policy will be deemed to have created a disruption to the instructional environment and will have the electronic signaling device confiscated and may be subject to disciplinary action. Reminder: Confiscated devices will either be returned at the conclusion of the school day or returned after the administrator or designee has consulted with the student and/or parents/guardians. Confiscated devices will be available for parent/guardian pick up at the conclusion of the day after being consulted with the administrator. Students are personally and solely responsible for the security of their electronic signaling devices, including cell phones and smartwatches. The Evergreen School District is not responsible for theft, loss, or damage of any cell phone or other electronic signaling device. Devices confiscated more than three times may result in the student serving a Friday Reflection (1 hour detention).

Students are responsible for the use and care of all school materials issued to them, and are expected to cover their textbooks with protective material. Students take financial responsibility for damage or loss of materials prior to attending any school function or receiving any report card, dance ticket, yearbook, or other possible items (California Education Code 48904).

Students are responsible for bringing their materials and lunches to school every day. Parents dropping off lunches or school items is strongly discouraged. Please be advised that students will not be called out of class to pick up these items. Chaboya is not responsible for lost or misplaced items left in the office. Presents will not be delivered to students at school. Unclaimed items are donated at the end of each month.

If you are moving, please the attendance office at 270-6902 with the following information: 1) The last date your child will attend Chaboya; 2) Your new address; and 3) The new school address. The day before your son’s or daughter’s last day at Chaboya, the student needs to go to the office to get a checkout slip. This must be presented to each teacher to assure textbooks, library books, and other materials are returned properly.
